Oregon Public Gets Opportunity to Help Set 2014 Sport Halibut Seasons

Oregon fishermen will have a chance to help set the seasons for the ever-popular Pacific halibut sport fishery during two public meetings in September.

Both meetings will start at 7 p.m. They will be:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Holiday Inn Express, 135 SE 32nd St., Newport;
  • Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Best Western Beachfront Inn, 16008 Boat Basin Road, Brookings;

“The Pacific Council narrowed the list of options for changes to the 2014 Pacific halibut season,” said Lynn Mattes, halibut and groundfish project leader for ODFW. “This is the meeting where anglers can provide their input on the options forwarded to the council for next year’s halibut fishing opportunities.”

In addition, minor regulatory changes will be discussed at the meetings.

For those who cannot attend in person, a copy of the presentation will be available on the Marine Recourses Program halibut web page starting on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Anglers can provide additional comments to Lynn Mattes at 541-867-0300 ext. 237or by email: lynn.mattes@state.or.us or Patrick Mirick at 541-867-0300 ext. 223 or by email: Patrick.P.Mirick@state.or.us. Their fax number is 541-867-0311.

There will also be an on-line survey where anglers can express their preferences beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Please check the Marine Resources Program halibut web pages (http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfish/halibut/index.asp)for details.
