A whale near Angoon, Alaska nearly regretted its decision to surface last week after a floatplane almost collided with the animal while coming down for a landing. Thomas Hamm was able to capture the event on tape as the plane narrowly avoided the whale. On the video, it almost seems as if the humpback tried to warn the oncoming plane by signalling out of its blowhole.

“All the sudden, the pilot advanced the throttle and I didn’t know why. I thought, ‘Oh something must be wrong,'” Hamm told CNN.

Thankfully, both the animal and the plane’s crew left the incident unharmed.

  1. Sharp eye for the pilot. He must have caught the spray coming up as I doubt from his angle he could have seen the actual body of the whale.
