Video: This is the JLTV, the Military’s Official Humvee Replacement

On Tuesday, Oshkosh Defense was awarded a $6.75 billion contract to build at least 17,000 new light trucks to replace the US military’s aging Humvees. Their replacement is called the uninspiringly called the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV.

The new vehicles are expected to cost around $250,000 per unit and will phase out all existing Humvees over the next 25 years. The JLTV is equipped with a GM Duramax 6.6-liter diesel V-8, and it can be outfitted with a diesel-electric hybrid system. The JLTV has vastly upgraded armor compared to the Humvee and according to Oshkosh the underbelly provides protection comparable to an MRAP.

The offloading ability of the military’s new JLTV is nothing to laugh at either. Even though it’s almost twice as heavy as a Humvee, the new JLTV’s independent suspension system has more than 20 inches of wheel travel. The patented TAK-4i independent suspension also enables the vehicle to raise or lower the suspension for transport or loading. A version of the vehicle even competed in the Baja 1000.

You can learn more about the JLTV in the video below.
