Video: Bizarre “River of Sand” Flowing in Saudi Arabia

A video making the rounds on social media appears to show a river consisting almost entirely of sand rushing past onlookers.

The footage was reportedly recorded in Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter, the largest contiguous sand desert in the world.

At one point, the individual capturing the phenomena on his phone reaches into the streaming material and comes up with a handful of sand.

Speculation as to what the “river” actually is ranged from a flash flood carrying sand and other material to simply hailstones mixed with sand flowing atop a preexisting waterway. Whatever it is, it brings new meaning to the term “quicksand.”
