Photos: Wildly Experimental Soviet Small Arms Designs

In their quest for the perfect man portable weapons system the Soviet Union came up with some very interesting design concepts. Some of these even ended up as production firearms that you recognize today—some didn’t.

This album lays out the various design concepts of the Soviet Union, and it breaks them down by weapon type and design bureau. These concepts vary from wild prototypes like the TKB-022 to guns that actually entered service like the RPK. This fascinating gallery will show you a number of dead end gun designs, and some that were just too far a head of their time.

If you make it to the end you can even see some man portable rocket launchers.
