Video: Testing Rare Soviet ‘Sputnik’ 12 Gauge Slugs

Most hunting in Russia is done with shotguns, which means there is a wide variety of hunting slugs available on the market.

One of these slugs nicknamed “sputnik” for its satellite like shape has never been seen in the United States until YouTuber TAOFLEDERMAUS got his hands on some. The unique slugs were sent to him by a Russian survivalist who said that they were several decades old, and even rare in Russia.

The slugs performed exceptionally well, and they seemed to dump energy into all the types of targets very quickly. In testing, they did note that the slug was made out of very soft lead, which is good for soft targets.  However, sputnik wouldn’t be suitable for dangerous game such as brown bears, which require deeper penetrating projectiles.

Overall, these rounds were impressive for their simple design.
