Video: Only Known Wild Jaguar in the United States Caught on Camera

A U.S. Army base in southeastern Arizona caught a wild jaguar on camera in the Huachuca Mountains, near Sierra Vista, Arizona.

They immediately contacted the Arizona Game & Fish Department, as well as the U.S. Wildlife Service and reported the encounter.

“Preliminary indications are that the cat is a male jaguar and, potentially, an individual not previously seen in Arizona,” said Dr. Benjamin Tuggle, regional director for the Southwest Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This is pretty exciting news, especially if they determine this jaguar has never previously visited the U.S. in the past. Officials are hopeful that other jaguars will eventually join this cat traveling up from Mexico. Research shows that jaguars in southeastern Arizona are capable of traveling 500 square miles.
