Breaking News: Potential New State Record Black Crappie

The Internet, and Facebook specifically, is both a blessing and a curse. Scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed can often reveal photos and information about record fish catches and animal harvests, but it’s also wise to “pump the brakes” a little and wait for the facts to catch up to the rumors.

With that in mind, it appears that a monster crappie was caught recently in Illinois. According to Facebook reports, the angler’s name is Ryan Povolish, and he landed the slab on Kincaid Lake in southern Illinois. The current Illinois state record black crappie weighed 4 pounds 8 ounces and was taken in 1976.

So, is this new fish big enough to top that 40-plus-year-old record? At this point, we aren’t sure.

As you can see by scrolling down through the various Facebook posts and pics below, the exact weight of this crappie varies slightly depending on the source of the information. Thus far, we haven’t seen an official announcement from anyone at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

We’ll keep you posted when we learn more.

P.S. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this article for a crappie that might break the galaxy record for black crappie!
