SHOT Show 2019: Holosun 507c and solar gun optics shine
Eve Flanigan 01.24.19
Optics maker Holosun displayed several new products at SHOT Show 2019. When this writer asked to be sure if the small, shiny plates on their demo optics were solar panels, the rep said yes and strove to educate readers, saying, “people don’t understand, it’s not that the solar panel charges the battery. The solar panel itself powers the optic. If it gets too dark, the backup power source—the battery—kicks in to supply power. Our batteries give 50,000 hours service on the medium setting. As long as there’s some light, the optic will not fail.”
With that clarification out of the way, two new red dot long gun optics were shown. The HE512-GD has aluminum housing and is lightweight. Inside, the reticle is gold—a color the rep claims works well in all light conditions, and is unusually apparent to people who have color blindness. There are three reticles to choose from using a scrolling button: a 65 MOA circle, 2 MOA dot, or both. It has “shake awake” technology, that is, it’s motion-activated. The 512 optic retails for $350.
A favorite optic of Holosun consumers is the 510 BDC for long guns. It comes with solar fail safe technology, multiple reticle choices, and is waterproof. In 2019, a gold version will be released; price yet unknown.
The company’s biggest seller is a 2018 release, the 507C reflex sight for pistols. Its reticle can be switched between red, green, and gold. It has aluminum housing. It has 12 brightness settings, two of which are night vision-compatible. Windage and elevation are adjustable at 1 MOA per click. It’s made for drop-in installation for the customary RMR milling job. The 507C pistol sight retails for $299.
These are but a small sampling of a diverse selection of optics made by Holosun.
