Wausau, WI – Anglers from across the country are invited to compete in the 2012 USA Ice Team Championship at Lake Wausau on March 8-11, 2012. The United States Freshwater Fishing Federation (USF3) is sanctioning the championship and the event will follow the rules of international ice-fishing competition.

“The USA Ice Team championship will determine the best ice anglers in the country,” explained Team USA Captain Mike McNett. “After we’ve found the cream of the crop, we will choose our 2013 USA Ice Team members.”

The championship will be decided over five heats during the weekend to qualify the 2013 USA Ice Team. Unlike species-specific ice fishing competitions, this event only counts panfish and rough fish in a multi-heat format. Anglers not only need to catch lots of fish, but consistently catch large fish when necessary. This will help the anglers focus on this unique style of competitive ice fishing.

The format of the championship will be as follows:

• Open Heat 1: March 9 from 7-10 a.m.

o Total fish heat: Angler who tallies the most fish wins the heat.

• Open Heat 2: March 9 from 1- 4 p.m.

o Total weight heat: Total weight of catch with a 25-fish maximum limit determines the winner.

• Semi-finalists announced March 9 at 6 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel in the Three Rivers Room

• Semi-final Heat 1: March 10 from 7-10 a.m.

“Imagine a first-time competitor coming to this open championship doing well and earning a spot on the USA Ice Team,” McNett remarked. “You get to represent the United States on a world stage on our home turf in 2013.”

The USA Ice Team won the 2010 World Ice Fishing Championship in Rhinelander, Wis., a feat Team Captain McNett is eager to repeat.

“We have a tremendous talent pool of ice anglers in this country,” McNett said. “The tough part will be finding these anglers and focusing their talent to succeed at the international level. I really encourage every angler to come and compete. You won’t really know how good you are or how good you can be, until you fish for the USA Ice Team.”
