Coastal Expo Brings the Beach to Edinburg, Texas

Edinburg will host the Rio Grande Valley Coastal Expo Feb. 10. At this family-friendly event visitors see and touch crabs, sea stars and other coastal animals as well as view a glass-bottom boat stream, solve a fish mystery, learn about the Texas coastal habitat, fish for live catfish and other activities. Shows include Lucas Miller’s “The Singing Zoologist” and a “Birds of Prey” show from the Last Chance Forever organization.
“This event is such a great way to show our valley community what amazing coastal wildlife and habitats we have and how we can all do our part to protect and enjoy them,” said Jennifer Own, Refuge Manager for Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.
Over 2,000 school children are expected to attend the event. Coastal Expo will be open to the public for Family Fiesta from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Park. After the fiesta the classic rock and blues band Southern Train will perform from 6-9 p.m. at an outdoor concert in the park. Guests are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for the concert and fiesta.
The expo and fiesta are free events open to the public. The expo is made possible by a partnership between the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the City of Edinburg, the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands organization and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“We are very happy to announce that U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is a partner with Coastal Expo for the first time this year,” said Kris Shipman, TPWD Coastal Expo coordinator. “They will be providing a wide range of new activities including archery and kayaking as well as educating the public about ocelots and ocelot conservation.”
