Max Michel, Jr., kicked off the 2012 competitive shooting season with a second-place finish at the Florida Open, held over the weekend at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Fla.

“Starting off at the Florida Open is a great challenge and forces me to hit the ground running on the season,” Michel said. “This match attracts the best competitors from around the world and the course design requires a great deal of focus.”

Using classic International Practical Shooting Confederation targets on 30-round courses of fire, the Florida Open is similar to many of the international matches Michel competes in throughout the year. The world’s best shooters converge on Florida for this early season event.

“With the level of competition here this weekend, second-place finish is a good way to start the year,” Michel said. “I’m looking forward to another great season representing Team SIG SAUER.”

After what Michel described as “putting more into this off-season than ever before,” the SIG SAUER team captain is looking to maintain momentum throughout a long season, which culminates in early November with the World Speed Shooting Championships, better known as the Steel Challenge.

With a final score of 1456.5843 match points, Michel finished just 15.74 points out of the top spot. In addition, Michel won 3 of the 10 stages outright.
