Vermont Deer Hearings Begin Mar. 26

If you have an interest in Vermont’s white-tailed deer you will want to attend one of the annual public hearings being held in March and May by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department to discuss the deer herd.
The meetings begin March 26 in Castleton and Montpelier.
Wildlife biologists will share information on 2011 hunting season results as well as data gathered at biological check stations on antler measurements, ages and weights of deer taken. Winter severity data will be reviewed, and the prospects for 2012 season will be discussed. Preliminary harvest totals from the 2011 hunting seasons show Vermont hunters took 12,132 deer during archery, youth, rifle and muzzleloader seasons. Those totals will be discussed in details at the meeting and in the “2011 White-tailed Deer Report” being compiled by Fish and Wildlife Department staff.
“We also are holding these meetings to hear from hunters and other Vermonters about deer,” said Director of Wildlife Mark Scott. “I encourage anyone interested to attend one of the meetings, all beginning at 7 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m.
- March 26 Castleton – Education Center, Kehoe Conservation Camp.
- March 26 Montpelier – Pavilion Auditorium, 109 State Street.
- March 28 Orleans – Lake Region Union High School.
Two additional public hearings, with dates and locations to be announced, will be held in May after the department presents its 2012 youth deer hunting season, archery and muzzleloader antlerless deer permit recommendations to the Fish and Wildlife Board.
