Michigan DNR Seeks Volunteer ORV Safety Education Instructors, Offers June Training Academies

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking qualified applicants to become volunteer off-road vehicle (ORV) safety education instructors.
ORV instructors must attend a three-day ORV Instructor Academy where they will be taught instructor policy and procedure, classroom management and teaching concepts. Applicants are also exposed to basic hands-on operational skills on off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, utility-terrain vehicles and winching and recovery equipment. TheORVInstructorAcademyis free of charge, with attendance mandatory for all new successful instructor applicants. Existing instructors are also encouraged to attend.
There are two ORV Instructor Academies scheduled for 2012 and each class size is limited to 24 students. TheORVInstructorAcademyruns Friday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The academies will be held at the DNR’s RalphA.MacMullanConferenceCenterin northern Roscommon County.
The first academy is scheduled for June 1-3. The second academy will run June 8-10.
Individuals desiring certification as a DNR volunteer ORV safety education instructor must:
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- Be a high school graduate or possess a graduate equivalency diploma (GED);
- Have no felony convictions;
- Have no misdemeanor convictions within the past three (3) years;
- Have no convictions that resulted in the revocation of OHV operation privileges within the last five (5) years. (Other convictions of natural resource law violations are subject to review and may result in the rejection of any application.);
- Maintain a high moral, ethical and mental character; and
- Be a graduate ofMichigan’s or another state’s OHV safety education program or other industry-accredited safety program (such as ATV Safety Institute, Motorcycle Safety Foundation or United 4WD).
Individuals who have an interest in teaching students to be safe and responsible ORV users may begin the process by requesting an application from the DNR’s Marketing and Outreach Division at 517-335-3418. After submission of a completed application, a background check will be conducted. Successful applicants will then be contacted to schedule attendance at an ORV Instructor Academy.
