Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail Holds Season Opener At West Tawakoni, Texas

This past Saturday March 10th the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Lake Tawakoni for their season opener with adverse conditions making it a tough event for many of the anglers. Temperatures dropped 20-30 degrees from early Thursday and several inches of rain fell on the area over the last 3 days. Making matters even tougher, winds shifted out of the east on tournament day from 5-10 mph. Teams had quietly reported some potentially massive stringers over 240 pounds in the days prior to the event, but with the shift of the wind so did the bite for many teams.
Even with the changing conditions over 70 top anglers from 7 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. This year’s Cabela’s King Kat Classic will be held at Selma, Alabama September 27-28-29, 2012.
Results for the Top 5 Teams
Taking first place was the team of Michael and Teri Littlejohn of Midlothian, Texas with a weight of 106.6 pounds and earning $2,500.00. Michael and Teri were fishing the north end of the lake in 22-25 feet of water using cut shad to catch nearly 35 fish for the day. Each team is allowed to weigh in their top 5 legal fish for the day.

In second place was the ever popular Paragould, Arkansas team of Daryl and Jason Masingale weighing in 97.75 pounds and earning $1,200.00. Daryl and Jason also received an additional $580.00 for catching big fish of the event with a 67.45 pound Blue catfish. The team was fishing around the Kitsee inlet in 15-17 feet of water using skipjack to catch 12 fish for the day.
Second place gets thier turn on the podium too.
Third place went to the Moody, Texas team of Roy Ewing and Jason Cummings weighing in 82.35 pounds and earning $700.00. Roy and Jason were fishing Nera Caddo in 2.5 feet of water using shad and catching 10 fish for the day.
Matthew Easterling of Wedgefield, South Carolina and Scott Buske of Witchita Falls, Texas took fourth place with a weight of 78.6 pounds earning $400.00. Matthew and Scott were fishing south of the 2 mile bridge in 28-38 feet of water using shad. The team caught 15 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the team of Cody Mullenix of Sadler, Texas and Billy Mullenix of Whitesboro, Texas weighing in 68.05 pounds and earning $200.00. Cody and Billy fished the north end of the lake using cut shad in 20-25 feet of water to catch 20 fish for the day. In 2004 Cody caught a state record blue cat on Lake Texoma weighing 121 pound 5 ounces at a length of 58 inches long.
