For the second time in three years, Coach Karen Monez has guided the Texas Christian University’s Rifle Team to an NCAA National Championship. Led by yet another dominating performance by future Olympian Sarah Scherer, the Horned Frogs overcame a five point deficit and lay claim to the 2012 National Crown.

Monez, an NRA Life Member, has been coaching the TCU Rifle Team since 2004. As part of three World Championships Teams and winner of fifteen NRA individual titles (including ten Sea Girt trophy vases in fifteen years) it’s no wonder that the Horned Frogs became a national power with Monez at the helm.

Making a late charge

Kentucky should have known they were in trouble. Though holding a five point lead after the smallbore phase of the finals, their total of 2,328 was eight points off last year’s championship charge. Then came the air rifle — the first official sighting of March Madness.

While Texas Christian improved their 2011 air rifle total by two points, the Wildcats’ tally toppled by thirty-five. That was more then enough room for TCU to leapfrog the cats. After Scherer, Beard, Brogdon and Green shot for a combined total of 2353 points, the only thing left to do was to wait for the trophy engraving.

So congratulations to Texas Christian University. The team show a lot of character coming back to regain the crown. Just don’t get too comfortatable … Kentucky, and others, are sure to come back in 2013 with a fire of their very own.
