Tall Ships to Celebrate Bicentennial of the War of 1812 at New SF Marina Pier

Dozens of magnificent Tall Ships will visit New London, Connecticut, July 6-9, as part of a bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812 and the composition of The Star Spangled Banner. At the center of the festivities will be a new floating pier and docks from SF Marina.
Including vessels from around the world and led by USCG Barque Eagle, the Tall Ships will make a dramatic entrance at the mouth of the Thames River Harbor before tying up at the pier. This is the final 2012 port of call for the event, with huge crowds expected for the celebration.
When the New London City Pier isn’t hosting grand sailing vessels, it serves as a transportation hub. SF Marina supplied five SF 400 floating breakwaters, including SF 1200 berthing fingers ranging from 40′ to 65′, for the project. The robust, reinforced concrete system accommodates transient vessels up to 100′, and is designed to withstand the busy river’s tides, currents and rough water from heavy area traffic.
Its unique location provides access to the Northeast rail systems, with a station feet from the docks, and a ferry terminal with service to Long Island. The New London City Pier is at the heart of the scenic Thames waterfront park, as well, so the docks will be subjected to the stresses of heavy pedestrian traffic. The new docks will easily serve this busy community for 30-50 years with very little maintenance.
