   03.23.12

The excitement was high at the sixth annual National Archery in the Schools (NASP)-Georgia State Tournament!

Archery students were at the top of their game with 15 of 25 schools shooting qualifying scores for the NASP National Tournament, May 11-12, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. This national event will host more than 7,000 student archers from nearly 40 states making it the largest archery competition in the world.

Winners at the NASP-Georgia State Tournament include:

  • Bagley Middle School out of Chatsworth shot a 3,243 to lead a field of 25 archery teams and nearly 600 shooters from state-qualifying elementary, middle and high schools.
  • Bagley Middle School featured male champ Hunter Jennings, who shot a 284 (out of 300), and female champ Haley Bagley, who fired a 283.
  • Bay Creek Elementary School(Loganville) fifth-grader Danny McIntire fired a score of 286 to win the highest scoring male title. Woodlawn Elementary fifth-grader Alyssa Laviana shot a 284 to win the highest scoring female title.
  • Woodlawn Elementary in Chatsworth shot a team score of 3,203 to capture its third consecutive elementary division title at the state tournament. Woodlawn is also the defending elementary division national champion after winning the crown last year in Kentucky.
  • Dodge County High School in Eastman took home the high school division title with a team score of 3,177. Dodge’s Joshua Peterson won the high school male division with a score of 284, while Blayre Durden won the high school female division with a 270.

All division winning teams automatically qualify for nationals, while several other schools met qualifying scores to reach the year’s National Tournament in May. A “team” consists of 16 to 24 shooters with at least five members of the opposite gender.  Nearly 40 percent of the state tournament field was female.

Archery teams that competed in the Georgia-NASP state tournament this week had to win their division at one of five regional tournaments in January and February of this year or shoot a regional score high enough to be selected as a wildcard team. More than 900 student archers competed in the five regional tournaments.

Georgia teams qualifying for nationals are: Woodlawn Elementary (3,203), Bay Creek Elementary (3,095), Lee County Elementary (2,894), Bay Creek Elementary JV (2,893), Lake Park Elementary (2,873), Woodlawn Elementary JV (2,816), Bagley Middle (3,243), Morgan County Middle (3,093), Wynnbrook Christian (3,034), Dodge County Middle (2,990), Bulloch Academy (2,970), Dodge County High (3,177), Johnson County High (3,100), Miller County High (3,064) and Marion County High (3,016).
