Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Results for the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes at Sheffield, Alabama

This past Saturday March 24th the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Pickwick/Wilson Lakes at Sheffield, Alabama. In the event over 100 top anglers from 13 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. This year’s Cabela’s King Kat Classic will be held at Selma, Alabama  September 27/28/29, 2012.

“Angler noticed a drop in the fishing when the current dropped from 80,000 cubic feet to 20,000 cubic feet tournament morning changing up conditions drastically from Friday.  Plus a stiff 20 plus MPH breeze was blowing right down Wilson Lake making it extremely rough with 4 foot plus waves later in the day. Over 100 anglers from 13 states participated and over 300 spectators were on hand cheering on their favorite anglers as they came to the weigh-in”, said Tabor.

Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the team of Brent Riddle of Chillicothe, Missouri and Larry Yowell of Kirksville, Missouri with a total weight of 128.25 pounds and earning $3,500.00. Brent and Larry were fishing up near the Pickwick Dam in 30-60 feet of water using skipjack heads to take first place and catch only 5 fish for the day. Each team is allowed to weigh in their top 5 fish for the day.

In second place was the Killen, Alabama team of Douglas Hendrix and Quentin Hendrix with a weight of 106.25 pound and earning $1,500.00. Douglas and Quentin were fishing Wilson Lake in the morning to catch 3 fish and then moved to Pickwick Lake when the wind picked up on Wilson Lake where they caught their final 2 keeper fish to give them second place. The team caught fish in 4 feet of water up to 60 feet of water using skipjack to catch a total of 7 fish for the day.

Third place went to the Caledonia, Mississippi team of Joey Pounders and Jay Gallop with a total weight of 90.65 pound and earning $1,000.00. Joey and Jay were fishing Wilson Lake in 20-40 feet of water using 4 inch shad to catch 25 fish for the day.

Daryl and Jason Masingale of Paragould, Arkansas  took fourth place with a weight of 90.25 pounds earning $700.00. Daryl and Jason were fishing Wilson Lake in 35-50 feet of water using skipjack fillets to catch 12 fish for the day including Big Fish of the Day weighing 49.95 pounds and earning the team an additional $880.00. Daryl and Jason also had Big Fish of the Day at the first event of the year at Tawakoni, Texas with a 67.45 pound Blue catfish.

Fifth place went to Donald Moore III of Louisiana, Missouri and Brad Pruett of Pleasant Hill, Illinois with a weight of 88.15 pounds and earning $400.00. Donald and Brad were fishing Wilson Lake anywhere from 15-60 feet of water using skipjack to catch 7 fish for the day.

“We want to thank Colbert Co Tourism and the City of Sheffield for making this event possible”, said tournament director Tanner Tabor. Each year one of the big events is the Kids Fishing Rodeo and this year over 130 kids participated with  Food Land providing hot dogs, chips, and drinks for all participants”, said Tabor. “We also want to thank the Sheffield Parks and Rec.  for their help each year to make this event such a big success”.
