In the event over 60 of the top anglers from 10 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2013 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. Results for the Top 5 Teams
Taking first place was the team of Glynn Grogan of Arlington, Kentucky and Walter Hayes of Cunningham, Kentucky nearly set a couple of new Cabela’s King Kat Records with a weight of 237 pounds and earning $3000.00 in the process. Grogan and Hayes also took Big Fish of the event with an amazing 75.55 pound catfish which netted the team an additional $600.00. Glynn and Walter were fishing downstream from Metropolis drifting over 35 to 45 feet of water using whiting heads and skipjack to catch 12 fish for the day including the 75.55 pounder gave them big fish of the event. Whiting heads is another name for mooneye, which is an excellent bait fish to use when fishing for big catfish.
In second place was the Paragould, Arkansas team of Daryl and Jason Masingale with 131.05 pounds and earning $1,100.00. The Masingale team was fishing 4 miles upriver, drifting with skipjack to catch 8 fish for the day.
Third place went to the team of Joe Ludtke of Springfield, Illinois and Jerry Cline of New Berlin, Illinois weighing in 130.1 pounds and earning $500.00. Joe and Jerry was fishing 5 to 15 miles upriver in 20 to 40 feet of water drifting with skipjack whiting (mooneye) to catch 8 fish for the day.
Wayne and Jenifer King of Mt Vernon, Indiana took fourth place with a weight of 125.2 pounds and earning $300.00. Wayne and Jenifer were drifting some 5 miles upriver in 5 to 30 feet of water using whiting heads to catch 7 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to Clay Cannon of West Paducah, Kentucky and Joe Ben Hogencamp of Bardwell, Kentucky weighing in 117.75 pounds and earning $200.00. Clay and Joe Ben were fishing 20 miles up river in 30 feet of water using skipjack to drift with the current to catch 8 fish for the day.
“A very special thanks goes to Lindsay and the staff of Metropolis Tourism for hosting the event”, said CEO Darrell VanVactor. “Everyone thought the recent high water, muddy conditions and rapidly falling river levels would hamper fishing. Once again the quality of the Cabela’s King Kat anglers showed that great fish could be caught in adverse conditions with the winning weight being only 2 pounds off the record 5 fish weight in the history of Cabela’s King Kat events. Big fish of the event was a 75.55 cat and the largest fish weighed in so far in the 2013 year”, said VanVactor. The Ohio River has shown through the Cabela’s King Kat events to be a national hot spot when it comes to quality catfish. Metropolis would be an excellent destination for a fishing vacation this summer. For more information on this area call: 877-424-5025 or visit their website at: http://www.metropolistourism.com.
