Montana FWP Encourages Critique from Online Hunter Education Students

About 60 online Montana hunter education students are being offered the opportunity to critique a new hunter education field-course in Helena while completing their certification requirements.
“Participation in this first of its kind course will provide online students and FWP with the unique opportunity to help guide future field-course offerings,” said Wayde Cooperider, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ hunter education coordinator in Helena. “These students, who successfully completed the first segment of their hunter education online, will be asked to evaluate the new field course and suggest ways to help FWP standardize field courses statewide.”
The six-hour course will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 17 at the Helena Trap Club, 5505 N. Montana Ave. Students who have successfully completed the online course must preregister online by visiting FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov. The new classroom prototype includes in-depth big game identification and extensive safe gun-handling techniques, while the outdoor field course includes instruction and hands-on proficiency demonstration in safely controlling a firearm’s muzzle, crossing obstacles, storing and transporting firearms in a vehicle, determining “shoot and no shoot” situations, and live-fire exercises in which students may shoot shotguns and air rifles. Students who successfully complete the new field course will be certified to hunt in Montana.
All firearms will be supplied by FWP. No other firearms are permitted. Students must wear hiking type shoes and be prepared to be outside in any weather for up to three hours. For more information call 406-444-9947.
