Daniels and Blizzard Lead the Pack in Council Bluffs, Iowa at Cabela’s King Kat Tournament

This past Saturday September 7, 2013 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Missouri River at Council Bluffs, Iowa for the last of 18 qualifying events leading up to the Cabela’s King Kat Classic. Each event this year has been outstanding and this, the final event of the year left spectators with unbelievable excitement with the leaders surpassing the second place team by nearly 100 pounds.
In the event 69 of the top anglers from 7 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the final opportunity to qualify for the 2013 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. Results for the Top 5 Teams
Taking first place was the team of Billy Daniels of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Walter Blizzard of Omaha, Nebraska with an amazing 143.25 pounds and earning $3,000.00. Billy and Walter also captured big fish of the event with a 67.80 pound blue cat which allowed the team to earn an additional $580.00. The team was fishing north on the river in the Blair area, anchored down on the river channel in 18 feet of water using cut golden eye to catch a total of 6 for the day. Each team is allowed to weigh their top 5 fish for the day
In second place was Phil Brown of Carlisle, Iowa and Dale Brown of Iowa City, Iowa with a weight of 43.95 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Phil and Dale were fishing very close to the weigh in site in front of downtown Council Bluffs anchored down in 15-20 feet of water using shad and Asian carp sides to catch a total of 9 fish for the day.
Third place went to the well known Kansas team of John Jamison of Spring Hill, Kansas and Mark Thompson of Williamsburg, Kansas with a weight of 37.85 and earning $400.00. John and Mark drifted 15 miles downriver from weigh in over river channel using creek chubs in 15 feet of water to catch 10 to 12 fish for the day.
Travis Tullis of Corning, Iowa and Edwin Van Dorn of Des Moines, Iowa took fourth place with a weight of 35.4 pounds and earning $300.00. Travis and Edwin fished the Nebraska City area of the river in 25-30 feet of water anchored down using bullheads and leopard frogs to catch 7-8 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the 3 generation team of Heath, Thomas Clemons of Cameron, Missouri and Heath D. Clemons of Weatherby, Missouri weighing in 31.55 pounds and earning $200.00. Unfortunately the team had to leave before the interviews were conducted.
“The temperatures were in the high 90’s with high humidity making it a very miserable day for fishing, but the water had risen in the past few days making more ramps accessible and the water color much better”, said Cabela’s King Kat CEO Darrell VanVactor. “The winners outstanding weight came from catching 2 large blue cats that made the big difference with nearly all the other fish weighed in being channel cats and flatheads”, said VanVactor.
