Celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day at Mississippi’s “Outdoorama on the Rez”

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) invites Mississippians to join in the nationwide celebration of hunting, fishing, shooting, and wildlife conservation on September 28, National Hunting and Fishing Day, by attending “Outdoorama on the Rez”. National Hunting and Fishing Day was created in 1971 to celebrate hunting and fishing and to recognize America’s sportsman-based system of conservation funding. That system now generates more than $1.7 billion per year and benefits all who appreciate wildlife and wild places.

“Outdoorama on the Rez” is an outdoors event designed to introduce participants to the concepts of hunting and fishing through hands-on experience.  This event is hosted annually by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation and the MDWFP at Turcotte Education and Shooting Facility as part of National Hunting and Fishing Day.  This year’s event will be held on September 28 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Participants will learn how to reload shells, tie flies, fish for catfish, shoot skeet and sporting clays, and shoot bows and arrows.  Other activities and topics include canoeing, treestand safety, and the importance of clean water and recycling.

Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), formerly known as the Mississippi Game & Fish Commission, is an agency of the government of the U.S. state ofMississippi responsible for programs protecting Mississippi fish and wildlife resources and their habitats, as well as administering all state parks; it has its headquarters in Jackson. The agency issues hunting and fishing licenses, advises on habitat protection, and sponsors public education programs. It is also responsible for enforcement of Mississippi's fish and game laws. It is separate from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, which is the governing body for the state's natural salt-water resources and law enforcement thereof (i.e. Gulf of Mexico, ocean-going vessels, etc.).
