Montana Public Meeting Set on Elk Foundation Land Purchase Near Lewistown

Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold a public information meeting about a proposal to acquire and manage 40 acres from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in central Montana.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Sept. 26 at the FWP Lewistown area office, 215 Aztec Drive, next to the airport.

The property was recently acquired by RMEF. It contains a 30-foot common boundary with the Lewis and Clark National Forest in the Big Snowy Mountains in Fergus County. Purchase would provide access to about 18,000 acres of national forest service land.

FWP plans to prepare the site for public use, including establishing a parking area, a well defined trail, appropriate fencing and boundary signage. However, the land along Red Hill Road south of Lewistown is currently not open to the public.

The Sept. 26 meeting is free and open to the public.
