California DFW Reminds Hunters to Be Safe, Follow Regulations and Share Photos as Big Game Hunting Season Begins

As the fall 2013 big game hunting season opens, California hunters are urged to remember basic hunter safety practices, to know and comply with all laws and regulations and to carry all required licenses and tags in the field. Hunters are also reminded to pay close attention to weather conditions while in the field and to follow all applicable rules and regulations for using any public lands while hunting.

Regulations and the Big Game Hunting Digest can be found on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) website at www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ and www.dfg.ca.gov/publications/digest/.

The following seasons will open or have just opened in September:

  • General deer season for B, C and D3 through D10 zones; Roosevelt elk hunts in the Siskiyou, Northwestern California, Klamath, Marble Mountain and Mendocino hunt areas
  • Rocky mountain elk hunts in the Northeastern California hunt area
  • Tule elk hunts in the West Tinemaha, Grizzly Island, East Park and Lake Pillsbury hunt areas

Hunters are also invited to share their big game take photos with CDFW. Quality images will be considered for publication in the California Hunting Digest. Images must be high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files, or prints produced by a commercial quality photo processor. The hunter and animal must be in a natural setting and priority consideration will be given to photos that show an animal with the tag attached. Images may be sent via email to publications@wildlife.ca.gov or via mail to California Hunting Digest, 1807 13th Street, Suite 104, Sacramento, CA 95811. Printed images will not be returned unless specifically requested.

Please note that all California hunters are required to pass a hunter safety course prior to purchasing a hunting license. For more information, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/.
