Small and powerful is the theme of two features in the GUNS December issue, showcasing the stainless steel Auto-Ordnance 1911TC .45 ACP and the North American Arms Sidewinder .22. Despite their difference in size, these handguns are equals when it comes to packing a mighty punch. GUNS contributing editors John Taffin and J.B. Wood were set to the task of testing these dependable handguns — and both came through with flying colors.
“Whereas my original Auto-Ordnance is a basic no-frills, military finished Government-style .45, this latest iteration of the 1911 from Auto-Ordnance definitely rates the title of Custom Model,” explains Taffin. “This Auto-Ordance has proven itself to me to be an exceptionally high-quality 1911 at a most reasonable price.”
Wood’s exploration of the North American Arms Sidewinder revealed a quality pocket pistol, as he highlights the innovative features it offers for shooters.
“One interesting feature is that the cylinder crane is on the right side, swinging out in that direction,” describes Wood. “This causes no loading or ejection difficulty, and for some shooters, it may actually be more convenient than a traditional left swing-out.”
Also featured in this issue is the 2013 GUNS Christmas Gift Guide, a look at Colt’s and Smith & Wesson’s handgun cartridges from the 1870s, John Barsness’s tribute to mentors who provided many invaluable shotgunning lessons and a celebration of the Remington 1100’s 50th anniversary.
