West Virginia Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt and Banquet Oct. 25-26 at Stonewall Resort State Park

The 2013 West Virginia Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt event will take place Oct. 25 and 26, operating out of Stonewall Resort State Park near Weston in Lewis County. This will be the seventh year for the fundraising event that presents the proceeds to the Hunters Helping the Hunter (HHH) Program, administrated by the West Virginia Food Bank in Gassaway.

Since its inaugural event in 2007, the One Shot has donated more than $300 thousand to the HHH Program. The event is supported by volunteers from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the private business sector and individuals who act as guides for participating hunters. All hunting takes place on private land so as not interfere with other hunters. Only antlerless deer are harvested, helping to control populations on those lands. All venison harvested during the hunt is donated directly to the HHH program.

The hunt will begin with the traditional “sighting in of the rifles” at the Stonewall shooting range Friday afternoon, Oct. 25. This is followed by a reception Friday evening where the hunters are introduced to the guides and landowners. The hunt will take place Saturday, Oct. 26. The program concludes Saturday night with a reception followed by an award banquet, raffles and live auction. This year’s invited dignitaries include Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and West Virginia native Brig. Gen. “Chuck” Yeager, retired.
