Congressional Letter Aims to Adjust Ethanol Mandate to Prevent Possible E15-related Engine Damage

U.S. Reps. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Jim Costa (D-Calif.), Steve Womack (R-Ark.) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.) are taking the lead in preventing possible E15-related engine damage by sending a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to urge a “fair and meaningful nationwide adjustment to the ethanol mandate in the Renewable Fuels Standard. Prompt action by the EPA can help … prevent engine damage.”

The EPA has one tool that can provide immediate relief from the RFS, which was created in 2005 with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and expanded in 2007 with the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Currently, the RFS mandates 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022. The law gives the administrator of the EPA flexibility to reduce the required volume of renewable fuels in any year. By reducing the ethanol mandate in the RFS, E15 –a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume– will less likely be available in the marketplace.

The American Motorcyclist Association has repeatedly expressed concerns to government officials and federal lawmakers about possible damage to motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle engines caused by the inadvertent use of E15 when the new fuel becomes widely available.

This congressional letter would help protect the 22 million motorcycle and ATVs in America – and the riders who depend on their safe operation –from inadvertent misfueling.

The deadline for signatures on this congressional letter is Monday, Oct. 28! Act today to ensure your representative signs.

To urge your representative to sign on to the congressional letter, just follow the “Take Action” option to send a prewritten email directly to your lawmaker demanding access to safe fuel.
