The Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP)’s held its final regional of 2013 with the first SPP Southeastern Regional. The event was held November 2 at the Blue Grass Sportsman’s League (BGSL) in Wilmore, Kentucky and was hosted by the University of Kentucky Pistol Team.
The regional was more of a “North-to-South” regional featuring teams from Michigan and Wisconsin to the Panhandle of Florida. There were 13 teams, 20 squads representing all three divisions of SPP, Junior, Senior and Collegiate at the regional. The College Division was represented by six schools, including host Kentucky, Delaware, Eastern Kentucky, Florida State, Michigan State and Tennessee – Martin. The Junior / Senior Division once again proved they like to travel with teams from Michigan (Straight Shooters), Wisconsin (Wilmot), Missouri (Arnold Jr. Shooters), Illinois (Southern Illinois Lead Slingers), Kentucky (Blue Grass Sportsman’s League & Smokin’ Dragons) and Florida (Leon County Sheriff’s Explorer Post 15).
The Kentucky Wildcats Squad – 1 was the top centerfire Collegiate squad. The Florida State Seminoles took 2nd Place and Kentucky Squad 2 taking 3rd. In the Collegiate Rimfire Division Kentucky Squad 3 took home the Gold medal. The Michigan State Spartans won Silver and taking the Bronze medal was Kentucky Squad 4.
In the Senior Centerfire division Southern Illinois Lead Slingers placed 1st with Blue Grass Sportsman’s League (BGSL) Squad 1 coming in 2nd. Leon County Sheriff’s Explorer Post 15 took 1st in the Senior Rimfire division and the Straight Shooters come in 2nd.
Smokin’ Dragons took Gold in the Junior Centerfire Division and Wilmot 2 won Silver. In Junior Rimfire, Arnold Junior Shooters Red squad won 1st place honors with Straight Shooters Squad 2 taking 2nd and BGSL Squad 2 came in 3rd.
“We held our first SPP demo a year ago and at that time we had no idea how fast the program would grow here in the Southeast,” said Brandon Ironmonger, UK Coach and Blue Grass Sportsman’s League Head Coach. “We are extremely happy to have been awarded a regional and be a part of this fantastic program.” “This has been a great year for SPP with great growth across the country,” said Scott Moore SPP National Director. “This is our sixth regional in 2013 and each one has had great attendance, it sure bodes well for 2014!”
Coach Ironmonger also served as Match Director and was assisted by BGSL members who worked as safety officers for the match. Representing SPP was National Director Scott Moore and Program Manager Tammy Mowry. Also GLOCK SPP liaison and Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) Board of Director member, Ed Fitzgerald was on hand with loaner handguns and instruction.
