Pope & Young Club Announces Conservation/Outdoor Film Festival Award Winner

The Pope & Young Club, a non-profit North American conservation and bowhunting organization, announces the Mule Deer Foundation’s Pope & Young Club Conservation/Outdoor Film Festival award winner.

The award for best “High Country Mule Deer” film with a bow was awarded to South Cox of Fortuna, California during the Western Hunting & Conservation Expo, hosted by the Mule Deer Foundation and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife.

“We’d like to thank Gary Wilson from the Outdoor Film Festival & Tour and the Pope and Young Club for the opportunity to share our Backcountry Mule deer hunt entitled “Perseverance”. It’s a great honor and we really appreciate the opportunity,” says South Cox, Owner/Bowyer of Stalker Stickbows. “I joined the Pope and Young Club back in the late 80’s. I have always recognized the Club for promoting high moral and ethical standards for bowhunters; something that in this day and age is more important than ever. Having the short film, Perseverance, recognized by the Pope and Young Club is an incredible honor. I am both humbled and inspired; inspired to go out again next year and try to do an even better job.”

“This film captures the art of high country spot and stalk and is every mule deer archers dream hunt. Big mountain basins, tall rocky peaks, open alpine meadows, make for the perfect early season archery adventure. South Cox’s “Perseverance” was filmed using traditional archery equipment, elevating the degree of difficulty. Any archer knows that hunting High Country for Mule Deer isn’t easy, especially when you’re trying to capture it on film,” says Gary Wilson, founder of the Outdoor Film Festival.

As part of the Outdoor Film Festival, the Conservation Series focuses on films depicting ethical, fair chase bowhunting. The Pope & Young Club picks the highest quality film that best depicts the conservation and ethics the Pope & Young Club has championed for decades.

“The South Cox mule deer hunt characterized the essence of bowhunting; close encounters, adrenaline rushes, blown opportunities, frustrations, failures and success, not to mention the great photography work and majestic high mountain scenery,” says Mike Schlegel, Conservation Chairman for the Pope & Young Club.

The Pope & Young Club will be awarding their Conservation Series award at Outdoor Film Festivals held throughout 2014.
