South Dakota and Wyoming Team Up for Hunter Education Challenge

Young hunters will get a chance to demonstrate their shooting ability, their knowledge of conservation and hunter safety at the 2014 Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) in Upton, Wyo., on Saturday, May 31, 2014.

South Dakota youth who participate in this event will compete in two age divisions and eight separate competitions involving outdoor skills and knowledge tests. Events range from firearm and archery proficiency to orienteering and a hunter responsibility exam.

“YHEC is a chance for youngsters to hone their hunting skills by shooting shotguns, muzzleloaders, .22 rifles and archery equipment as well as test their knowledge on hunter responsibility and wildlife identification,” said Jason Kool, South Dakota HuntSAFE coordinator. “I would encourage anyone who has completed their HuntSAFE course, and is under age 18, to participate in this event.”

All registrants must have a photocopy of their Hunter Education card, recent photo, birth certificate and have parent or guardian approval. For more information about the event or to register, visit: http://wgfd.wyo.gov/web2011/Departments/Education/pdfs/YHEC_2014_RULES0005295.pdf.

Registration deadline is May 23, 2014, and there is an entry fee of $10.

The event is sponsored by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Wyoming Friends of the NRA, Wyoming Game and Fish Hunter Education Program and the Upton, WY Gun Club.
