Western Maine Guide Service Offers Fly Fishing Father/Son Package

Fishing is considered an ideal recreational activity for a father-son bonding experience.  Author Lou Ureneck’s, Backcast, about fatherhood and fly fishing chronicles a river journey with his teenage son following his divorce and Norman Maclean’s, A River Runs Through It, is much quoted for its family and fishing metaphors.

Locke Mountain Guide Service www.lockemountainguideservice.com located along the banks of the Upper Androscoggin River in Western Maine has partnered with a four-season resort and a seasonal campground to offer a fly fishing package designed to enrich a father-son relationship.  The two day getaway includes a guided full day of fly fishing from a drift boat and a half day guided wading trip. Both days include a shore lunch and basic instruction.  Two nights’ lodging for father and son, a full breakfast and 4 course meal daily is included with the package at the Bethel Inn Resort  www.bethelinn.com and two nights’ camping at the Pleasant River Campground www.pleasantrivercampground.com is available for the outdoorsmen who wish to tent out under the stars. Minimum age is 10 and fishermen must provide their own clothing, gear and fishing licenses.  Locke Mountain Guide service will provide the flies, personal flotation devices and an 8” x 10” glossy photograph of the family and day’s catch.  The package is available June through September.  Prices range from $699-$1299 inclusive of Maine lodging taxes.

The primary waters fished for brown, rainbow and brook trout are a 20 mile stretch of the Androscoggin River and its tributaries from the New Hampshire border to Rumford Falls.    During the warm summer months, fly fishing for bass takes place below the falls.  Over 40 years ago the Androscoggin was considered to be one the nation’s most polluted rivers but thanks to the Federal Clean Water Act, state and local management practices including float stocking, habitat enhancement and shore land clean-ups, the Upper Androscoggin River has become one of the Northeast’s emerging destination fisheries for trout.

The Father-Son Fly Fishing Package may be reserved by phoning the Bethel Inn Resort at 1-800-654-0125 or Pleasant River Campground at 207-836-2000.  Information on fly fishing and guided trips is available by phoning Locke Mountain Guide Service at 207-381-7322.
