Crappie USA Tournament Results for Tennessee’s Old Hickory Lake at Gallatin, TN

This past Saturday May 10th Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Old Hickory Lake at Gallatin, Tennessee where anglers from 8 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the Murray, Kentucky team of Mason Milby and Ashley Adams weighed in 11.05 pounds and earned $1,200.00. Mason and Ashley were pulling crank baits 10 to 12 feet deep at a speed of 1.2 mph in 30 to 40 ft of water and catching 50 fish for the day. The team also won the Driftmaster bonus.

Second place went to the Mt. Juliet, Tennessee team of Harold Maddux and Brian Oldham with 10.05 pounds and earning $750.00. Harold and Brian were fishing from the head of Spencer Creek to 2 miles below Cedar using a new bait not on the market yet called a Mag Pole to catch around 100 fish for the day.

In third place was the team of Ronald Hollingsworth of Clarksville, Tennessee and Paul Eldridge of Spring Valley, Ohio weighing in 9.57 pounds and earning $500.00. Ronald and Paul were fishing in Drakes Creek long line trolling Flicker shads in 12feet of water up to 3 mph to catch 50 fish.

The Wingo, Kentucky team of DeWayne and Reed McCord took second biggest fish of the event with a 2.07 pound crappie and earning $85.50. The team also earned an additional $250.00 by winning the Ranger Cup Award in the Semi-Pro Division.

Taking both the Talon and Grizzly Bonus was the team of Carlton Teague of Gaylesville, Alabama and Tad Myrick of Leesburg, Alabama. Each recieved $250.00.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the New Castle, Indiana team of Roger Claywell and Mike Wantz weighing in 9.6 pounds and earning $650.00. Roger and Mike were long line trolling with shiners in 20 feet of water to catch 30 fish for the day.

Second place was a tie going to J.W. Jackson of Tullahoma, Tennessee and Lanny Jenkins of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and the team of Charles Smith of Clarksville, Tennessee and Marty Ellis of Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee both teams weighing in 9.11 pounds and earning $312.50.

The team of Jackson and Jenkins were spider rigging with homemade bucktail jigs on bottom minnows on top hook fishing 8 to 22 feet also used Southern Pro jigs and Bobby Garland jigs to catch 25 fish for the day.

The team of Smith and Ellis were fishing in 12 to 14 feet of water using Southern Pro jigs slow trolling on the bottom catching 20 fish for the day.
Taking fourth place with 8.81 pounds and earning $150.00 was the one man team of Leonard Barnett of Owensboro, Kentucky. Leonard fished Drakes Creek pulling white/chartreuse Southern Pro jigs in 12 feet of water on flats with fish suspended 1 to 2 feet off bottom. Leonard also won the Ranger Cup Award in the Amateur Division earning $125.00.

Taking big fish of the event was the Jasper, Indiana team of Kent and Anita Besaw with a 2.12 pound crappie and earning $199.50.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

Weather-Morning started with 60 degrees and scattered showers until 9:00 then cloudy. Afternoon was sunny with a high of 79 degrees and light winds.
