Record Numbers Participate in Ohio High School Fishing State Championship
Cabela’s Columbus worked with The Bass Federation (TBF), in partnership with FLW to bring the 2014 Student Angler Federation (SAF) Ohio High School Fishing State Championship presented by Cabela’s to Central Ohio. The championship took place Saturday, May 10 at Alum Creek State Park with 35 teams from across the state participating.
The state championship is a two person team event for students in grades 9-12. Each team is accompanied on the water by their “coach” who is also the boat operator.
The tournament festivities kicked off Friday, May 9 at Cabela’s, 1650 Gemini Place, Columbus, OH with the angler welcome meal, tournament check-in and rules meeting.
The anglers launched and began the tournament at 6:15am and weighed-in at 3:00pm at Alum Creek, Galena Ramp. Despite the rainy weather conditions on Saturday the anglers where able to fish a great tournament.
The top three teams that qualified and advanced to the Regional Championship later this year;
- First Place – Reece Eddleblute & Randy Denny from Morgan High School; 11lbs 8oz
- Second Place – Haleigh Caldwell and Jalea Lyons from Gallia Academy; 10lbs 7oz
- Third Place – Alex Redwine & Harbor Lovin from Cincinnati Youth Bass Club; 9lbs 4oz
“It’s great that Cabela’s was able to support this exciting tournament and bring it to Central Ohio as the tournament field nearly doubled this year” said Derrek Shively, retail marketing manager. “We strive to open new opportunities for youth to enjoy the outdoors and with this year’s tournament being in Columbus it definitely opened the doors to other areas of the state. We look forward to building off of this success for future tournaments.”
For the past three years the tournament has been held on the Ohio River in Southeast Ohio. With it now being held in Central Ohio it makes it more accessible from anywhere in the state which could continue to generate more participation.
The 2014 Student Angler Federation (SAF) Ohio High School Fishing State Championship presented by Cabela’s was also generously supported by Cambria Suites, Costco (Polaris) and G&J Pepsi-Cola Bottlers Inc.
