Crappie USA Releases 2014 Tournament Results for Cave Run Lake at Morehead, Kentucky

This past Saturday May 17th Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Cave Run Lake where anglers from 6 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Tim and Reba Cleary of Pikeville, Kentucky with a weight of 4.22 pound earning them $1,000.00. The team fished the main lake casting Cabela’s Marabou jigs over natural cover catching over 90 fish. With chartreuse color working the best, most fish were holding 12 to 18 feet of water.

Second place went to the team of DeWayne and Reed McCord of Wingo, Kentucky with a weight of 3.45 pound earning $600.00 plus $250.00 for the Ranger Cup Award. The team fished Beaver Creek and other pockets in the area trolling jigs and crank baits in 20 feet of water. The best color was purple & white and catching a total of 25 fish for the day.

In third place was the team of Lee Glover of Covington, Kentucky and Henry R. Ridner of Union, Kentucky with a weight of 3.25 pound earning $400.00. The team fished the main lake in 15 to 20 feet of water tight lining live bait to catch over 60 fish for the day. The team targeted natural logs and stumps.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the team of Kris and Terry Mann of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky with a weight of 4.4 pound earning $600.00. The team fished the main river channel in 12 feet or less of water using one pole to tight line using Crappie Magnet jigs yellow/chart and caught 60 fish. The team also won the Driftmaster rod holder bonus of $150.00 in products.

Second place went to Steven E. Johnson and Richard Stipe of Lancaster, Kentucky with a weight of 3.96 pound earning $400.00. The team fished the Popping Rock area of the lake in 3 to 4 feet of water spider rigging Chartreuse/white jigs to catch 65 fish.

Taking third place was the team of Williams Collins of Wellington, Kentucky and Ina Donathan of West Liberty, Kentucky with a weight of 3.61 pound earning $200.00. The team fished the river channel breaks using live bait spider rigging in 18 to 29 feet of water to catch 25 fish.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event.. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

Weather- Anglers were fighting cold front conditions with winds 5-10 and temperatures dropping to the low 50’s on Friday and chilly 38 degrees on Saturday morning.
