Latham Steers “Spiced Rum III” to Top King Mackerel in TCBA Tourney

A one-hour bite isn’t much during a full-day fishing tournament, but it was all the Spiced Rum III Fishing Team needed to land the biggest Kingfish during the 28th annual Treasure Coast Builders Association (TCBA) Fishing Tournament.

The event benefits the Association’s charitable fund and the Future Builders of America programs and scholarships. Fishing was slow for the first half-hour on the Juno Ledge when team mates Freddie Joseph and Vince Molle hit a double-header in 120-feet of water and all Hell broke loose.

“I always say you can’t win without a good crew and good equipment,” said Capt. Bill Wummer. Teammate Sherrie Beswick –the 2013 Lady Angler of the Year in the Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) –took the helm while captain and crew moved around the boat, passing rods over and under each other while fighting the two fish.

“Sherrie was a great boat driver,” Wummer said of his teammate and his Yamaha-powered, 35-foot Contender; a task made easier with its Latham Marine full-power Hydro-Electric steering system.

Joseph’s fish was landed first, Wummer explained, “And the other fish looked bigger while it was still 40-feet down.” It was.

Molle’s catch topped the scales at 34.3 pounds, which landed the team a $1500 check.” We kept looking for a bigger one, and were on fish for about an hour,” Wummer said, “but it got very quiet after that.”

In addition to Latham Marine, Spiced Rum III is sponsored by Tuppen’s Marine, Yamaha Outboards, Contender Boats, Admiral Nelson’s Rum, Tito’s Vodka, Gill Media, Ocean LED, JL Audio, Ask the Advisors, Medical Center of the Palm Beaches, Gordon & Doner, Tamer Products, Juno Bait & Tackle, Sailfish Marina, New Port Cove Marina, J Camm Luhrs, and United K9 Special Patrol.
