August Issue of GUNS Magazine Introduces New “Shooters Rx” Column

The August issue of GUNS Magazine introduces a new bi-monthly column, “Shooters Rx,” by Dr. Will Dabbs, in which Dabbs shares his medical knowledge as well as his life-long passion for the shooting sports.

“Because of the danger inherent to firearms, safety is the paramount concern for responsible Rugged Individualists,” Dabbs writes. “Bones heal, chicks dig scars, pain is temporary but glory is forever… but for the typical American shooter, some basic first-aid skills and a little well-selected gear can salvage a fun day at the range or even save somebody’s life.”

The cover story for the August issue features Springfield Armory’s improvement on a classic with the development of the SOCOM 16, modeled after the M14 service rifle. Executive editor Payton Miller takes an extensive look at Springfield’s revised platform and shares the results after a test run at the range with this “mean and green” rifle.

“In several aspects, the SOCOM 16 addresses the late Jeff Cooper’s recipe for the Scout Rifle concept, specifically the provision for a forward-mounted, long-eye relief scope,” Miller writes.  “It’s darn near as handy as a traditional lever-action carbine and will reach further and shoot faster.”

In “Scope Innards” Field Editor John Barsness gives readers an in-depth look at the basics of optical mechanics and its relation to the way modern riflescopes function. Barsness also addresses the importance of scope adjustment over optical quality.

“Many people assume optical quality is the most important aspect of a riflescope, and any scope with good optics is also fine mechanically,” writes Barsness. “Neither is true, and the finest glass in the world is worthless if we can’t adjust our scope to work correctly.”

Other features include an article by John Sheehan on the seven main rifles fielded at the start of WWI 100 years ago, an overview by Dave Anderson on the benefits of carrying lighter hunting rifles, a review of the Uberti Cattleman in .22 LR by John Taffin and a guide to perfecting the long-range shot by Jacob Gottfredson.

The August Gun Giveaway includes the 9mm Walther PPQ M2 and a Dillon Precision RL 550B reloading press. The 599 610 Karambit folder by FOX Knives, as well as the M22 Warrior Tactical Flashlight from Olight and breakdown mat from TekMat are also a part of the giveaway.
