Recreational Fishing Alliance Endorses LEE Zeldin in NY-1

Vote For the NY Saltwater Angler on Tuesday, June 24th

The Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) is reminding saltwater anglers in New York’s first congressional district (Eastern Long Island) to support Lee Zeldin for Congress on Tuesday, June 24th.

As state Senator in New York, Zeldin has made recreational fishing a top priority working in Albany, and he’s proven to be a leader who can work across both sides of the aisle.

RFA executive director Jim Donofrio is urging all anglers who are registered republican in the first district of New York to turn out for the republican primary on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 to vote for Lee Zeldin for Congress.

“Sen. Zeldin has been a champion for saltwater anglers in Albany, and he’s pledged to continue that fight on behalf of coastal fishermen once he gets to Washington DC,” Donofrio said. “It’s not often that RFA members get a chance to vote for a saltwater angler in a congressional election, that’s why June 24th will be a big day for first district republicans in New York who will be heading to their local polling place.”

First elected to the New York senate in 2010, Zeldin was immediately successful in working across party lines to repeal a repressive saltwater fishing tax during his first term in office. He was re-elected in 2012 and has continued to make saltwater fishing a priority during his time in the New York state capital.

Prior to taking political office, Zeldin was deployed to Iraq in 2006 with an infantry battalion of fellow paratroopers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. In 2007, he transitioned from active duty to the Army Reserves where he currently serves with the rank of Major. In 2008, Zeldin started a law practice in Smithtown, NY; he is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Jewish War Veterans.

The First District campaign has turned ugly in recent months, much the same as earlier republican primaries in this region, with carpet-bagger George Demos running a trashy and deceitful advertising campaign designed to slander Zeldin by using Demos’ father-in-law’s money which has also filled the coffers of leading California Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“Demos has never reached out to the fishermen, he’s not a real candidate, he’s purely there on the June ballot as a Pelosi-democrat, an operative in place to disrupt the entire political process,” said Donofrio.

Donofrio said RFA members in New York’s first district should expect to receive a phone call on Monday as a reminder about Tuesday’s republican primary vote. “Even if you’re not registered to vote in the primary, call a friend or two who might be and encourage them, as we’re encouraging you, to support a man with honor and integrity at the polls on June 24th.”

“Better still, support the one candidate who’s actually a saltwater angler himself, and who who grew up in the district he represents,” Donofrio said. “New York voters have a chance to send a fisherman to Washington DC, that’s a great opportunity for all RFA members nationwide.”
