Sport and Free Pistol Titles Awarded on Final Day of National Championships

The USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol wrapped up today with Pistol titles awarded in Men’s Free, Women’s Sport and several Paralympic Rifle events.

For Junior competitors, today was also the last chance to snag a spot on the team for the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championships team that will compete in Granada, Spain this September.

Junior Men’s Air Pistol champion Wyatt Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) claimed his second championship title of these Nationals by winning the Junior Men’s Free Pistol event. Junior Men’s Air Pistol silver medalist Alex Chichkov (Temple Terrace, Florida) also joined him on another podium by winning the silver medal. The pair had already secured their spots on the World Championship team for Air Pistol, but will now also be joined on by Junior Men’s Free Pistol bronze medalist David Wilkinson (Charleston, South Carolina).

In the Open division, Men’s Air Pistol champion Jim Henderson (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit/Midland, Georgia) also claimed gold in the Free Pistol event. The silver medal in this event went to John Zurek (Phoenix, Arizona) and bronze to Cody Owsley (Tonganoxie, Kansas). By virtue of his third-place finish, Owsley will now join Henderson and Zurek on the National Team.

In Junior Women’s Sport Pistol, Cindy Chung (Diamond Bar, California) would claim top honors. Irina Andrianova (Schaumburg, Illinois) won silver and Taylor Gallegos (Prosper, Texas) picked up her second bronze medal of this National Championships, also placing third in Junior Women’s Air Pistol. The trio will also represent the United States at the World Championship in this event.

2012 Olympian Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Alabama) would win the gold in the Women’s Sport Pistol Open division, followed by Brenda Silva (Snowflake, Arizona) who won silver and Teresa Chambers (Dearborn, Michigan) who won bronze. Uptagrafft and Chambers also won silver and bronze respectively in Women’s Air Pistol earlier in the week.

Winners in the Open division for both Pistol events were determined based on a composite of scores from each day of competition plus additional points for finish in today’s Final. Junior winners were selected in a similar fashion, but with a Final occurring each day.

The lone Paralympic event Final that was contested this week featured Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone, a mix of the Paralympic R3 and R5 events. The overall title for this event went to John Joss (USAMU/Corsicana, Texas). Nick Beach (Dresden, Ohio) would win silver and McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Washington) would win bronze. These three athletes will also compete at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships in Suhl, Germany next month.
