This Week on AR-15 Podcast – When MSRs Fail
OutdoorHub 07.02.14
This week’s Tip of The Week is sage advice: find a good gunsmith. It’s useful to have that contact whether you’re changing stock parts out, making custom modifications, or plain fixing a malfunctioning weapon. This advice segue’s into the main topic.
If you are an avid shooter or brand new to the AR platform, this episode is a must listen. Anthony Hardy joins Reed Snyder for Episode 81 of AR-15 Podcast to talk about the frustrating side of everyone’s favorite black rifle–times when it fails. Reed divides this frustrating event into three categories; operating failures; ammunition failures; and catastrophic failures. Reed speculates that the two major reasons for operating failures are lack of lubrication or presence of fouling in the system.
The second most common occurrence of failure deals with ammunition. While not technically a rifle failure, ammunition related failures effect the same result nonetheless. Many of these malfunctions can be attributed to lower grade ammunition. Corners cut in the manufacture of these rounds often result in lower performance.
Finally, the most critical of the failures is catastrophic failure of the rifle. These are most critical because they cannot be corrected by standard operator procedures or better ammunition products. Some of the more critical instances that Reed and Anthony touch on in this category are barrel bulges and cracks in critical systems.
