Haynes-Lewis Wins Double Trap Title at National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships

Nor the wind nor rain that blew through the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) today in Colorado Springs could temper what turned out to be a hotly-contested match for the Men’s Double Trap title. In the end, Jesse Haynes-Lewis (Nahant, Massachusetts) would best Logan Mountain (Palmdale, California) for the title, 8-7 in a shootoff.
Champions at NJOSC are determined by individual scores during the Qualification rounds, plus additional points earned during the medal matches: Five for first place, four for second, all the way down to one point for fifth- and sixth- place.
Though Haynes-Lewis would finish in second place in the “gold-medal match,” the points he earned there plus his Qualification rounds would tie him with Mountain, thus causing the Championship to be decided in a shootoff.
With today’s win, Haynes-Lewis also earned an appointment to the Junior National Team. Mountain, who won the Men’s Trap title earlier this week, had already been appointed to the Team with that win.
Last year’s silver medalist Jacob Fritcher (Driftwood, Texas) would take bronze overall and received a renewal of his appointment to the Junior National Team. Fourth-place finisher Jordan Hintz (Burlington, Wisconsin), who won today’s gold-medal match, was appointed to the Junior Olympic Squad.
Men’s and Women’s Skeet action also started today with its first three rounds. Competition will conclude with the final two rounds and medal matches tomorrow afternoon.
The men’s competition currently has a three-way tie for first place among Phillip Jungman (Caldwell, Texas), Zachary McBee (Gilbert, Arizona) and Will Thomas (Pine Mountain, Georgia) with 72 targets a piece. Aaron Wilson (Lansing, Kansas) is just one target behind at 71 and Granger DeWitt (Bryan, Texas) has 70.
Fresh off the International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup in Beijing, China, Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) currently leads the women’s field with 70 targets. Junior World Championship Team member Hannah Houston (Columbia, Tennessee) is in second place with 67 targets. Kendall Reed (Azle, Texas) and Junior World Championship Team member Sydney Carson (North Liberty, Indiana) are tied for third with 66 targets each.
