Nighthawk Custom’s Bob Marvel Signature Model Featured in Sept/Oct Issue of American Handgunner

Nighthawk Custom’s Bob Marvel Signature 1911 showcases the best of what custom guns are made of in the September/October issue of American Handgunner. Contributing editor Jeremy D. Clough examines the Bob Marvel-designed, one-of-a-kind 1911, commissioned by Nighthawk Custom. Built with care and modern touches, Clough finds this pistol every bit as reliable, ingenious and shootable as 1911 aficionados have come to expect with Nighthawk Custom.
“Shot by hand, the pistol seemed to come alive. We had no trouble dinging a 4.75″ steel plate at 50 yards with it, and any closer was a lot like cheating. At 40 yards, a miss was rare,” describes Clough. “Once you get to the 1.5″ range (an average of all loads tested) a gun acquires a certain can’t-miss characteristic making it a joy to shoot. The Marvel had that in spades.”
Also featured in September/October’s issue is “When Citizens Fight Back,” in which Tom Givens details all the necessary training techniques and skills to help prepare an armed citizen for legal defensive gun use.
“The rule of thumb is most civilian shootings occur within the length of a car,” Givens explains. “The following are key skills the private citizen should concentrate on in their training: Quick, safe, efficient presentation of the handgun from concealed carry, delivery of several well-placed shots at distances from 3 to 7 yards and keeping the gun running, including reloading and fixing malfunctions.”
This issue of American Handgunner also highlights John Taffin’s recommendations on what makes a good “Old Man Gun,” a look at some notable firearms found in the Cody Museum, Dave Anderson’s close look at today’s must-have optics and an overview of Maxpedition’s latest knife designs.
