NRA Profiles New Laser Course Advantages

The July 2014 issue of the National Rifle Association’s Shooting Illustrated magazine has a feature article that will be of great interest to America’s handgun owners and self defense community. The feature by Shooting Illustrated’s Editor-in-Chief Ed Friedman profiles Arizona-based Gunsite Academy’s new training course that teaches students about the advantages of using laser sights on their handguns.
In the 6-page “Lasers Are Legit” article, Friedman notes: “Now, when Gunsite decides to offer a course based around a given platform (lasers), you are guaranteed that platform is a serious and legitimate tool for self defense. That alone should refute most of the criticism of handgun lasers, but the course itself does much more to prove the utility—indeed, the necessity—of putting a laser sight on your defensive pistol.”
Among the many tips Friedman covers in his article are that lasers make aiming and target acquisition faster, as well as providing a distinct advantage when aiming in low and fading light when standard pistol sights can be more difficult to see. While immersed in a dark shoot-house area and using a handgun equipped with a Crimson Trace laser, Friedman discovered that “While lasers provide a distinct advantage in such scenarios, you still need to achieve the proper shooting position.” This is a position that Crimson Trace continually promotes: Standard basic training is the essential building block before augmenting your firearm with laser sights to become a more accurate and confident shooter.
This defensive course is a result of a partnership between Crimson Trace and Gunsite’s training director Dave Starin to develop their world renown 250 Pistol Class that now incorporates the use of lasers. Students shoot and learn about pistol techniques and the benefits of visible lasers in personal protection situations. Students completing this innovative course will also learn when, where and how to use laser sights in a variety of personal defense conditions and environments. The course includes two evenings of low-light shooting experience and practice.
The next Laser-Integrated 250 Defensive Pistol Course at Gunsite will be held November 3-7. For more details, visit http://www.crimsontrace.com/company/gunsite-250-laser-course or call 800-442-2406. If you have questions about Gunsite Academy, call 928-636-4565.
