New Mexico Elk Rematch on This Week’s Federal Premium’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg, Thursday 7:30 p.m. MT

The one-horned bull elk that eluded Randy Newberg three years ago has crossed paths with him again on this this week’s Federal Premium’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg on Sportsman Channel, Thursday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. MT.

New Mexico is one of Newberg’s favorite elk hunting spots. “This is the fabled glory-lands of elk,” said Newberg. “When you think of elk hunting, you typically think of dark timber and mountains. But in New Mexico, we have rugged hills, deep cuts and grasslands. So you are mostly spot and stalk.”

The monsoon-soaked plateaus of west central New Mexico provide a wonderful backdrop for Newberg’s short, five-day hunt. He immediately spots a monster six-by-six bull on his very first day and starts closing in on the distance. However, he misjudges the wind direction and just as quickly as he spotted him, the elk caught his scent.

“Anyone who thinks they can outsmart an elk’s nose has another thing coming,” said Newberg.

With four days left on his hunt, will Newberg tag out in New Mexico?

Federal Premium’s Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg takes the same self-guided public land story viewers have come to love with his award-winning series, On Your Own Adventures, and tells that story in a deeper “behind the scenes” format.

This season also includes segments highlighting The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which is the largest land access program in history. “LWCF provides millions of acres of public hunting access, yet it largely goes unnoticed by the hunting community,” commented Newberg. “If LWCF is not reauthorized by Congress in 2015, hunters will definitely notice that. My goal is to educate and inform so hunters can take actions locally and nationally.”
