Guy Harvey to Nationally Air Two Documentaries on Destination America

Celebrated marine wildlife artist, scientist and conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey’s  on-and-under-the-water ocean research expeditions will reach national audiences this month courtesy of an agreement with the Destination America Network.

Owned by Discovery Communications, Destination America features lifestyle, historical and travel programming focusing on the culture of the  United States.   Available in nearly 60 million homes, the network was launched in 2012 (formerly Planet Green).

The two, hour-long documentaries, “Giants of the Gulf” and “Sharks of North America” were produced by Dr. Harvey and Emmy Award winning filmmaker/producer George Schellenger.  Each will air twice during September with “Giants of the Gulf” premiering on September 6 at 9 a.m.

Giants of the Gulf is a documentary providing spectacular footage of Dr. Harvey’s encounters with the legendary whale sharks off Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The film offers viewers an “up close and personal” experience with these gentle yet massive animals—which can grow to as large as 45 feet—as they mass in the hundreds for a few days for feeding off of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The film also brings viewers up close with sailfish and mako sharks, which also prowl the waters off the Yucatan.

Sharks of North America takes viewers on a scenic and scientific voyage that begins with camera eating Tiger Sharks just off the coast of North America in the Bahamas and ends off the Cayman Islands with Oceanic Whitetips, described by one time ocean explorer Jacque Cousteau as the “most dangerous of all sharks.”  In between viewers will encounter many other species including Mako, Blue, Lemon, Caribbean Reef and Great Hammerhead sharks.  Catch and release only shark fishing tournaments, groundbreaking research and  a visit when a young woman recovering from a shark attack and now a shark conservation advocate all make for a riveting, fascinating journey.
