This Week on AR-15 Podcast – the HK416 and its Civilian Cousin

Reed Snyder brings you a solo show this week on the AR-15 Podcast. Time is getting short to register for the Brownells sponsored rifle giveaway. Tune in to find out details about the build itself, and for how to enter and win.

This week’s tip of the week is one that applies to all firearms enthusiasts that tinker with or build firearms–be sure to verify information you receive about firearm builds. Ultimately, your firearm houses an explosion in close proximity to your face, so safety is paramount and it starts with sifting fact from urban legends and anecdotal evidence.

So what is the HK416? Reed gives a brief history of the Heckler & Koch M4 variant, how it was first spec’d and then fielded by Tier 1 units, and ultimately how it made it’s way into  standard forces and eventually the public market with civilian versions.  So how’s it different? One of the first characteristics that special operations was interested in was reliability. H&K’s short-stroke, gas piston system is one of the pioneers of this type of piston design. Other innovations assist suppressor use and folding front sights.
