Hidden Hot Spots

Ditches can be productive areas to hold big schools of bass.  Like any other structure, you’ll want to find ones with more irregular features.  These are the ditches that are more likely to hold fish.  If you can locate a ditch that has weeds, rock, notches, close proximity to a road bed, etc.  they will typically attract more fish than those which are barren.

Ever hear the saying “find the spot on a spot”?  With ditches, it is the same.  You need to locate the most productive area or the “sweet spot”.  A ditch the size of a football field may only be productive in one area the size of a car.  This is usually caused by something different, like an additional structural element or an additional piece of cover like some brush piles or weeds, shell beds or rock.  When you examine a ditch with your electronics, search around for these types of irregular features.  Most times that is where you will also mark baitfish and in turn bass.

Next time you’re heading out on the water spend a little time checking your contour map and see if you can locate some ditches off shore.  You might just find that honey hole of a lifetime!
