Having the proper gear plays a crucial role in determining whether a camping trip is a pleasurable experience or a miserable one. One of the biggest factors in determining the success of your camping trip depends on picking the right tent.
It’s your home away from home in the great outdoors. But with so many choices available, how do you know which one is right for you? Answering a few simple questions can help you choose a tent that’s just right for your family:
- Does the tent provide ample protection from the elements?
- Is the tent made of quality material?
- Does the tent have plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably?
- Will the tent fit in your vehicle?
- Is the tent light enough for you to carry it to and from your campsite?
Before you head out the door in search of the perfect tent, it’s a good idea to have a price in mind. Tents range in price anywhere from a hundred dollars or less to several hundred dollars or more. Minimize the time you spend looking for the perfect tent by starting your search at Cabela’s. With a wide range to choose from, one of these Cabela’s tents is bound to have the right features for your family and camping trip. Here are a few we like, broken down by price range.
This dome tent has a durable body capable of withstanding tough elements, a rain fly with a waterproof polyurethane coating, sturdy poles and stakes to keep it steady in the wind, and a tall center height of 66 inches to provide ample head room. In addition, with a sleeping capacity of five, your family has room to grow. At only 11 pounds, the tent should be light enough for most family members to carry with ease.
If you’ve ever gone camping with kids, you know kids sprawl. This tent is perfect for that kind of spreading out. The spacious interior boasts enough room to sleep 10 people comfortably. In addition, the tent includes sturdy fiberglass-pole and pre-attached guy ropes to allow for quick setup and polyester-taffeta walls with waterproof EverDry technology to keep you dry. A few other considerations families will appreciate are the pre-attached mud mat to keep the dirt outside, the mesh windows and roof to provide excellent ventilation, and the single cup-holder pocket and gear loft to keep your belongings organized and off the floor.
This backpacking tent makes a good and affordable choice if you are going to be joined by a partner on your backpacking excursion and don’t want to pack two tents. The tent features a lightweight yet durable aluminum frame, waterproof polyester construction, and a design that makes setup a cinch.
This two-room tent sleeps up to six campers comfortably. Its screened porch provides extra ventilation on warm days and is a great place for meals and gatherings—rain or shine. In addition, it includes pre-attached poles and quick-setting feet, the WeatherTec System to protect you from the elements, hassle-free auto-roll windows, and Illumiline reflective guy lines for greater visibility at night.
This tent is an outstanding value for the price. The tent sleeps eight people comfortably, provides lasting rain protection, includes factory-taped fly and floor seams and silver-coated rain fly to reduce inside temperatures, and is bug-resistant. My favorite feature, however, is that it includes color coding to make setup easy for people like me.
Basically, this tent is the same as Cabela’s Two-Pole Two-Person Backing Tent, but with more space. It features a simple, easy-to-setup design, waterproof polyester construction, the same lightweight aluminum frame, and no-see-um nylon mesh.
With floor space of 10×14, this Cabela’s tent comfortably accommodates up to eight campers. In addition, for added privacy, the interior can be divided into two rooms. It also features a durable fiberglass frame, waterproof polyester construction, four windows with fine polyester mesh to keep out insects and maximize air circulation, and four interior mesh pockets to organize and stash gear. A bonus for the taller folks is that the center height is just under seven and a half feet, giving you plenty of head space.
This spacious tent accommodates twelve people and can be separated into three rooms. The room combinations are endless. In addition to an extra-spacious interior, the tent boasts a 1,000mm waterproof-rated rain fly for maximum protection from rain, extra-durable shock-corded fiberglass and steel poles for easy setup, front and side doors to allow access without disturbing others, and a mesh roof and zippered windows to enhance air circulation.
While this isn’t a tent, we included it because we think it makes a great addition to any camping excursion. The shelter is lightweight and super easy to set up. Within minutes, you will have a 110-square-foot escape to enjoy meals, play games, or simply visit with friends and family. The shelter is water-resistant, includes tear-resistant panels to maximize allow airflow, and has window panels that fold out for use as awnings.
