10 Uses for Mylar Bags For Food and Otherwise

I love mylar bags. I use them for a lot of dried foods to store for short-term and long-term needs. Like rice, oats, wheat berries, white sugar, ground flour, baking soda, salt, etc.

However, mylar bags can be used for plenty of other things besides just food. I especially love any mylar bag that comes with a zipper, so I can heat seal it but once I open up the heat seal, I can also use the zipper portion to open and close with ease.

Here are the top 10 uses for mylar bags:

Important documents

Since mylar is suited to keep moisture out, storing your important documents inside of them is a great way to keep them safe. It’s not fireproof, but at least it can keep them safe from light and moisture. If you have zipper mylar bags, this is a handy way of being able to access them easily.

Ammo

If you get the 7mil thick, small pouch MRE bags, mylar is a great way to store ammunition. Stick a silica packet inside of it to keep even more moisture out.

Medical supplies –

Because, again, mylar is great to keep moisture out, keeping medical supplies inside of it can keep them safe from debris, moisture and exposure to other elements that may degrade certain medical supplies. This would be a great way to store excess gauze.

Seeds –

Mylar is an excellent storage bag for seeds. Keep seeds out of light and moisture, keeping them viable for as long as possible. You can place a silica packet or oxygen absorber inside for even more freshness.

Water purification tablets –

Keeping the bottles or sleeves of water tablets inside of a mylar bag helps to ensure they stay away from moisture, which can be the end to water tablet viability.

Water –

In a survival situation and need some water? Use mylar bags to scoop and carry water!

Herbs –

Keep herbs fresher for longer by placing them inside of a mylar bag. Mylar keeps moisture out as well as light and those can be two things that will make herbs go bad faster. You can place a silica packet or oxygen absorber inside for even more freshness.

Matches –

Keep matches safe from moisture by keeping them in a mylar bag! You can cut a big mylar bag down and seal or use a smaller mylar bag that has a zipper on it so you can open and close it with ease.

Freeze-dried meals –

Mylar bags are an excellent candidate to make your own dehydrated or freeze-dried meals to consume later. You can pour the water directly into the mylar bag and eat straight from the bag or you can pour them out to make them in a pot or pan. Either way, mylar bags are an excellent way to store meals to keep them away from moisture. Place an oxygen absorber inside with the meal.

Electronics –

Mylar bags are great at deflecting any electronic magnetic pulses (EMP). I would wrap your electronic device(s) in paper or a towel before placing inside of the mylar bag. Then heat seal to be most effective. You can also use it to fix a wet phone!

With any of these options, mylar isn’t resistant to changing temps or critters. Keep them secure in ideal temps, such as around 60-80 degrees, and keep them secured inside of bins where they are safe from the sharp claws of critters.

Get your mylar bags today and keep your food and stuff as protected as possible!
