Pour Over Coffee With the GSI Outdoors JavaDrip

To many, coffee is the most important item for starting a day off properly. Because of this, it will often make it’s way to the top of any weekend camper or backpacker’s checklist.

Heading out in to the wilderness for a night or a week requires a bit of planning. You have to decide what is important enough to take up space in your pack and if the added weight is worth it. Food planning will take things to another level, especially when it comes to food preparation. Many times, you have to sacrifice some of your favorite dishes because of the lack of refrigeration or access to things like an oven. One area you should not cut corners on, however, is your coffee preparation.

Having a great cup of coffee to kick start your 15 mile hike or day in the woods can make a world of difference. With that in mind, we decided to walk you through the best way to brew a cup of coffee, wherever your travels may take you. For this, we will be using the GSI Outdoors JavaDrip

GRINDING

It’s key that you have the proper grind size for your brewing method.  For a pour over you want your grounds to be approximately the size of granulated table salt.   We recommend keeping a hand grinder accessible for outdoor brewing.  This way you can grind your coffee fresh every morning.  You should grind enough coffee so you have a 1:16 coffee to water ratio, 1:15 if you want it a tad stronger.

Preparing to Brew
Heat your water to around 200 – 210 degrees Fahrenheit.  If you are using a pot, or kettle that does not have a temperature gauge, simply bring the water to boil, remove it from the heat and let it sit for 1-2 minutes without boiling. This should put you right around the suggested temperature.

Insert your filter and add the coffee grounds.

Next you want to saturate your grounds and let them bloom. Pour just enough hot water over your grounds to soak
them.

Let the wet grounds sit for about 45 seconds, this will help you get an even extraction. Finally,  you can pour the rest of your water over.  Make small circles while pouring, keep a slow steady stream and keep your funnel about ¾ full with water.
